I would like to take a moment and share with you a bill that in the process to be passed into law in the state of Illinois. This bill is called HB 2755, and if passed would allow the City of Shelbyville to vote on a 1% sales tax increase within the city limits of Shelbyville. If passed only the municipality and public school within the City limits of Shelbyville will benefit from this tax, yet every resident of Shelby county who shops at Shelbyville will also pay this additional 1% sales tax and their school district's will not receive any tax money, only Shelbyville. This means Cowden-Herrick would loose out on obtaining $72,000.00 in tax returns, in other words we still pay and all proceeds, our $72,000.00 goes to the Shelbyville school district and city municipalities along with the other 12 districts in Shelby County.Please be advised that the City of Shelbyville voted yes the last two times this proposal for a Shelby County 1% tax increase and several districts such as ours voted no. I have currently asked Chapin Rose to include the entire county on the next referendum for a vote with the stipulation that if the county fails to pass the 1% increase and the City of Shelbyville does pass it then we would have to simply concede. I do not believe our voters will be in favor of having to pay this tax with no return. Please get the word out to everyone you know.
